ANDERSON, S.C. — Two inmates escaped from the Anderson County Detention Center sometime around 11 p.m. Sunday, according to a statement from the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office.

The inmates chipped out of a block of cells in an older portion of the aging detention center, leading them into an office where they pushed out an air conditioning unit and then scaled a perimeter fence, the statement said.

The inmates are Jason Bradley Hughes, 35, of Toccoa, Ga., and Travis Eugene Foster, 28, of Anderson.

Hughes is listed in booking documents as a white male, 6 feet 3 inches, weighing 240 pounds and having brown hair and eyes and a small amount of facial hair.

Foster is listed as being a white male, 5 feet 8 inches, weighing 150 pounds and having brown hair, hazel eyes and short hair.

Warrants are being sought for the escape of the two men, according to the statement released Monday morning by sheriff’s spokesman Chad McBride.

The sheriff’s office is pursing the men using canines, the statement said.

The escapees should be avoided and anyone who notices the men is asked to call the sheriff’s office.

The detention center was originally built in 1956, with more recent additions and expansions, and it is considered to be the most crowded county jail in South Carolina, sheriff’s officials have said on several previous occasions. It has a rated capacity of 257 and often houses more than double that number.

Foster was in the detention center for two charges of grand larceny (between $2,000 and $10,000) and one charge of larceny. Hughes was in jail for a charge of failure to stop for blue lights and a charge of larceny.
