HAMPTON ROADS — NaphCare Inc., the medical provider named as one of the defendants in a civil lawsuit over the death of a Hampton Roads Regional Jail inmate, issued a news release Wednesday saying the company provided competent care.

“The passing of Jamychael Mitchell is a tragedy,” the statement said. “The allegations of indifference and neglect against NaphCare’s providers are false and unfounded. NaphCare will vigorously defend these false allegations against itself and its providers.”

Mitchell, 24, died in the jail last year after a series of systematic failures led to his remaining in jail instead of being transferred to a state mental health facility for treatment. The lawsuit filed by his family this week alleges jail officers beat and mistreated him.
