Fla. corrections officer beaten for 3 minutes

Union rep Joe Rojas says there was no lockdown after the incident and that no one called for medical help

SUMTER COUNTY, Fla. — An unarmed corrections officer at the Coleman prison complex has been hospitalized after he was badly beaten for three minutes by an unidentified inmate.

MyNews13 reports that the officer, who remains unnamed, was alone in the food prep area yesterday morning. Officials with the prison say officers carry radios with alarms; the alarm system has recently been repaired and an investigation is ongoing into whether the alarm worked appropriately.

Union rep Joe Rojas says there was no lockdown after the incident and that no one called for medical help.

“911 should have been called and sent him to the hospital,” Rojas said. “I understand the [officer] probably didn’t want to go to the hospital but at that point he probably wasn’t in his [right mind], he had a concussion and they didn’t call him an ambulance. That’s my concern.”

The penitentiary was locked down two hours later, and the warden is assessing the situation.
