TUCSON, Ariz. — A corrections officer who fatally punched an inmate in self-defense has returned to duty after being put on administrative leave.
According to local news station KVOA, inmate David Ray Maxwell was reported as being disruptive, prompting Officer Jason Hubert to attempt to calm him down. The inmate attacked Hubert, causing the officer to punch him in self-defense.
Maxwell fell to the ground and hit his head. He later died of his injuries after attempts to save him.
Hubert was placed on leave as standard protocol for similar incidents.
