PHILADELPHIA — Shortly after a 20-year-old man was released from confinement, he was shot and killed on prison grounds in Philadelphia.
Medics pronounced the 20-year-old dead after he was shot multiple times around 2 a.m. Thursday at the Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility in the city’s Holmesburg section, NBC 10 is reporting.
He was gunned down on a sidewalk near a shack in an area out of view of surveillance cameras when at least 10 shots were fired, reports indicate.
Shell casings were found near the body of the 20-year-old, who had been released from prison less than an hour before the shooting, Action News 6 ABC is reporting.
“It appears that shooter or shooters were actually on the grounds of the prison when the shots were fired,” Philadelphia police Chief Inspector Scott Small told 6 ABC.
Guards in the nearby shack did not see the shooting, but they saw a dark-colored vehicle speeding away, according to reports. It’s not clear if shots were fired form the car or not.
Police have not released the name of the 20-year-old or said why he had been held in prison.
Reports indicate he lived in the city’s Germantown neighborhood. It was not clear if he had been waiting for a ride home when he was shot.
