JOHNSON COUNTY, Iowa — Bids will soon be open for an estimated $1 million project to update the Johnson County Jail’s control room.
The Press-Citizen reports that the control room monitors the entire building. The upgrade will also include new cameras and sound alarms, as well as moderninzing some of the jail’s doors and locking systems.
While the project would be substantial, it would only cover a small portion of work needed on the jail, according to Supervisor Pat Harney. Future work will include installing at $750,000 generator, a $250,000 roof and another $250,000 for updates to plumbing and flooring.
The jail’s control room currently operates under the original technology installed when the jail first opened in the 1980s. Many of the parts or systems needed in repairs are no longer manufactured.
County Facilities Administrator Eldon Slaughter says they don’t expect a larger number of bids, and the project start date will depend on bid approval.
