MONTGOMERY, Ala. — A federal court order may lead to a significant pay raise for corrections officers in Alabama.
WSFA reports that the court order said the Alabama DOC “is to implement the recommendations” a consultant made in a new plan to address the understaffing issues. The consultant, Dr. Stephen Condrey, recommended raises for everyone in the department, including raising CO pay to $38,000 from its current level, which is just under $30,000.
The plan aims to improve staffing levels in the state’s prison system, which is among the most understaffed and overcrowded in the country. The consultant also recommended that the department offer raises and bonuses.
The changes must be implemented by the judge’s mandated Dec. 1 deadline, but the DOC said it has not reached an agreement with the consultant concerning the recommendations.
