VACAVILLE, Calif. — A prison librarian was told to go home and change after showing up to work in a pro-Donald Trump shirt.
Leo Sanchez, who has worked for the California Medical Facility for nine years, told KCRA his supervisor told him to go change his red shirt that said “Trump is my president.”
Sanchez went home, changed, and returned to work, but said other employees have worn pro-Hillary Clinton shirts. He told the station that because he supports Trump, he was punished.
“I told them my rights of free speech have been violated,” Sanchez said.

The dress code states that “employees may wear campaign buttons or political message T-shirts, provided that employees do not have direct contact with the public or clientele they manage or serve (for example, inmates in a prison setting or patients in a hospital setting).”
Spokesperson Vicky Waters said that employees’ political views have “no place in a prison setting. Decision to restrict such displays is reasonable, consistent with policy, and protection of institutional security.”
An investigation into the pro-Hillary shirts has been launched as well.
“I was just expressing an opinion,” Sanchez said. “Trump is my president. He won fair and square. And people, it’s time for everyone to get back together, you know kumbaya.”
