MISSOULA COUNTY, Mo. — Two grievances filed by a former guard depict the Missoula County jail as a hostile and unsafe work environment, laden with inmate abuse, employee favoritism and workplace violence.
The documents were submitted to Missoula County Sheriff Carl Ibsen and Capt. Jason Kowalski by former jail guard Tim Boileau, who ended his 15-year career at the facility in September.
Boileau said he enjoyed working with the inmates, but the situation at the jail was intolerable. He said he couldn’t continue working in a place where guards are penalized for reporting instances of inmate abuse and trying to initiate positive change.
“If you acquiesce to the system of no personal responsibility, you can maintain your job,” Boileau said. “There’s an issue of reporting and reprisal.”
