LEE COUNTY – The warden of the United States Penitentiary Lee was struck in the face by an inmate while conducting tours with other executive staff.

WCYB reports that the warden implements “management by walking around,” which involves interacting with the prison population, intended to provide transparency and interaction to the overall prison climate.

The warden suffered a cut above his eye and a responding officer who helped the warden subdue the inmate received a slight shoulder strain. Both were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

USP Lee remains in lockdown “out of an abundance of caution.”

It’s unclear if there was any motive for the attack. The incident is being investigated by the FBI.
