ABINGDON, Va. — A gang member and his associate, an inmate at a different prison, were both sentenced this week for their roles in a plot to abduct and murder the warden of Keen Mountain state prison.
Larry Darnell Boone, a “godfather” of the Mad Stone Bloods gang and inmate at the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail in Haysi, and James T. Brown, an inmate at Red Onion State Prison in Wise County, were each sentenced to 10 years in the penitentiary, according to a statement from Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring’s office.
In September 2013, an anonymous letter showed correspondence between both men about the plot, the statement said. Boone was about to be released at the time, but planned to help break Brown out by using an AK-47 during Brown’s visit to a local hospital, the release states.
Boone agreed to participate in the plan for $5,000, according to their correspondence. Prison officials interviewed Brown, who admitted to the plot, said he was trying to raise the money and had tried to find the warden’s home, the statement said.
Their plan was discovered just days before Boone was released, officials said.
