Mich. to consider bill on retired corrections officers

Would allow retirees to return to work and still receive pension payments

MICHIGAN — A bill that would allow retired corrections officers to return to work and still receive their pension payments is under consideration in Michigan.

House Bill 5881 is intended to save the DOC $7.5M by using the retired officers to reduce overtime, according to the Lansing State Journal. Though current state law prevents “double-dipping,” this bill would make retired officers the exception.

The retired, returned-to-work officers would only receive a salary capped at 80 percent of the maximum pay for a corrections officer, and would receive no benefits.

Officials are, however, considering one benefit: Worker’s compensation in the case of an attack.

“If somebody comes back to work and gets attacked…what are we doing to make sure they’re taken care of comparably to a prison guard who’s there as a full-time employee?” asked Sen. Bruce Caswell.
