New Mexico State Auditor Hector Balderes has called for a special investigation of the state prison system, KRQE CBS 13 reports.

The decision to investigate came after the secretary and deputy secretary of New Mexico’s prison system raised concerns about bid rigging and a circumvention of the competitive bidding process.

Balderes told reporters the investigation will focus on work done by vendors and contractors in and around state prisons. The work could have included roofing, plumbing, basic repairs and security cameras, according to the CBS 13 report.

The New Mexico Department of Corrections contracts were awarded between 2007 and 2010 and were worth up to $10 million.
