COLUMBUS, Neb. — The number of out-of-county inmates spending time in the local lockup continued to ebb during 2011, but the fees charged for housing out-of-county prisoners ticked up for the year.

The Platte County Detention Facility’s fees for housing out-of-county prisoners grew by more than $85,000 last year compared to 2010, according to the Platte County Sheriff Department’s annual summary of activities.

The jail collected more than $561,000 in fees for housing out-of-county inmates during 2011, a gain from the more than $474,000 that went into the county’s general fund during 2010.

The increased fees for 2011 are likely a one-year blip in declining county revenues for housing out-of-county prisoners, especially with the opening of a new Lancaster County jail this spring, Sheriff Jon Zavadil said.
