RACHINE, Wisc. — An inmate accused of fatally shooting a man has been slapped with new criminal charges following an alleged attack on a corrections officer.
Jerome S. Burkhart Jr. was charged with battery to a peace officer, violating a state or county penal institution law and disorderly conduct, according to the Journal Times.
Burkhart allegedly punched a corrections officer in the head multiple times after trying to grab a dinner bag away from the officer, according to his criminal complaint. The officer reportedly told Burkhart that the bag contained contraband.
Neither the inmate’s complaint nor the sheriff’s report of the incident clarified what was in the bag.
During portions of the attack, Burkhart reportedly prevented the officer from reaching his radio, had the officer positioned so staff at the officer’ station couldn’t see him, and allegedly made the officer fear for his safety as a handful of inmates gathered at the cell entrance, according to the sheriff’s report.
Burkhart’s bond was set at $10,000 and his preliminary hearing on the new charges is set for Dec. 19.
