BUSHNELL, Fla. — A corrections officer passed away Sunday after suffering a heart attack.
According to ODMP, Sergeant Jorge Ramos, 39, collapsed and died after participating in the statewide Correctional Emergency Response Team competition at Sumter Correctional Institution.
Sgt. Ramos passed away after being transported to Tampa General Hospital.
“Sgt. Ramos was an outstanding example of the character and values that set our Department’s employees apart. His tragic death is a reminder that our state’s uniformed men and women risk their lives every day in the pursuit of public safety,” Corrections Secretary Julie Jones said in a statement.
He served with the Florida Department of Corrections for nine years, and is survived by his wife and daughter.
“I extend my most sincere condolences to the Ramos family, and offer them my heartfelt gratitude for sacrificing so much in the service of our state,” Jones said.
