WEST SPARTA, N.Y. — State police say they’re trying to determine what caused a state prison van to crash on a western New York highway, injuring a guard and an inmate.
Troopers say a Department of Corrections and Community Supervision van was transporting the inmate to Livingston County Court in Geneseo around 9 a.m. Tuesday when it crashed and overturned in the northbound lanes of Interstate 390 in the town of West Sparta, 40 miles south of Rochester.
The correction officer driving the vehicle suffered minor injuries to his leg and was treated at Noyes Hospital in Dansville. A second guard in the van wasn’t injured.
Troopers say the inmate suffered a serious cut to his head and was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.
The occurred near the Groveland and Livingston correctional facilities, adjacent medium-security prisons.
