NEW YORK — An off-duty New York City corrections officer was killed outside her mother’s house in Brooklyn Sunday night by a gunman who police suspect was waiting for his victim.
The officer, identified by police as Alastasia Bryan, 25, of Crescent Street in East New York, Brooklyn, was shot several times and killed near East 73rd Street and Avenue L in the Flatlands neighborhood.
Bryan had just left her mother’s house and had climbed into the car to make a phone call when a gunman fired five times, Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce said Monday.
Bryan was found inside her parked car, “unconscious and unresponsive, with gunshot wounds to the head and torso” about 9:15 p.m., police said
News video from the scene showed her gray sedan with five bullet holes in the driver’s side window.
Bryan was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
The suspect appeared to be waiting for Bryan in another car and got out to shoot her, Boyce said. He then got into a tan car and drove off.
Boyce said Bryan had been a corrections officer at Rikers Island for only one month.
Correction Officers’ Benevolent Association president Elias Husamudeen said in a statement Monday the union is grieving “the horrific murder of one of the youngest members of New York City’s Boldest.”
“The COBA will do everything we can to support the officer’s family during this time and we will not rest until the assailant or assailants are brought to justice,” the statement said.
