BORDENTOWN TOWNSHIP — For the second time in as many days, an officers’ union is taking on the administration of a state correctional facility following an eruption of violence that they said left several of their members with broken bones at the hands of inmates.
On Friday morning, 17 juvenile offenders rioted inside a classroom at the Juvenile Medium Security Facility, joining together to attack the outnumbered officers who tried to quell the violence, according to Policemen’s Benevolent Association 105 President Lance Lopez Sr.
The riot is a symptom of the degradation of security at the facility, which carries juvenile offenders who require heavy security, Lopez said.
“Over the past year the disciplinary system in place at the Juvenile Justice Commission has deteriorated due to negligence and leniency by administration, resulting in an unsafe hazardous facility for officers, civilians and inmates,” he said.
