Herkimer, NY — A correction officer with more than 20 years on the job and a retired correction officer were among the dead in Herkimer County Wednesday after a gunman shot to death four people and critically injured two more.
“All of us at the New York State Correctional Officers & Police Benevolent Association are deeply saddened to learn of the senseless and tragic deaths of Michael Renshaw and Michael Ransear,” Donn Rowe, association president, said in a statement Wednesday night.
Renshaw was killed with another man at a car care business in the village of Herkimer. He was a correction officer at Mid-State Correctional Facility, and had 23 years on the job, Rowe said.
Ransear was killed, but at a barbershop in the village of Mohawk. He was retired from Mohawk Correctional Facility, and had spent his career as a correction officer, Rowe said.
“Today’s tragedies are a tremendous loss for everyone who knew these men and who served alongside them,” Rowe said. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to their families, friends and fellow officers during this difficult time.”
