MUSKEGON, Mich. — Two officers sustained non-life-threatening injuries during an altercation with an inmate who was trying to escape the Muskegon County Jail.

“It could have been a very bad situation. We could have had a couple of deputies end up dead. The inmate did not escape, so those are all good things,” Muskegon County Undersheriff Daniel Stout said.

It happened around 3:45 p.m. Thursday near a second-floor housing unit, according to a release from the Muskegon County Sheriff’s Department. Inmate Terry Wesley Raap assaulted several deputies with weapons he had made and a brick he had gotten his hands on.

“He somehow got a brick and he had it hidden and he hit one of the deputies twice in the head with the brick and then he had ... a couple of homemade shanks, knives that he made out of plexiglass,” said Stout. The sheriff’s department said it is investigating how Raap got the weapons.
