LINCOLN, Neb. — Three corrections officers were hospitalized after an inmate assaulted them.

Prison Spokeswoman Dawn-Renee Smith told the Lincoln Journal Star that the COs responded to the inmate’s cell Tuesday regarding a medical emergency. The officers saw the inmate was upset and there was blood inside the cell.

When the officers opened the cell door, the inmate allegedly struck all three of them in the head, pushing one CO into a wall.

Smith said the officers used force to subdue the inmate. The three COs were transported to the hospital for evaluation. One officer suffered a sprain and another suffered a possible concussion.

An investigation is ongoing. Smith said a disciplinary hearing will be held about the incident.
