BLYTHE, Calif. — Four deputies were seriously injured early Sunday during an assault and attempted escape at the Blythe Jail in east Riverside County, a sheriff’s sergeant said.
The incident began about 2:20 a.m. Dec. 29, when deputies at Blythe Jail, 260 N. Spring Street, were conducting security checks of inmate cells, Sgt. Thomas Velarde of the sheriff’s Colorado River Station said in a statement.
“During this check, two deputies were assaulted by inmates housed at the facility,” Velarde said. “Two other deputies responded to aid the victims who were engaged in a physical fight with the attacking inmates. These two deputies were also assaulted.”
In total, four deputies were seriously injured and required medical treatment at a local hospital, Velarde said.
