CREST HILL, Ill. — An Illinois corrections officer passed away from complications from corrective surgery on Tuesday.

Corrections Officer Tracy Cooper was undergoing corrective surgery to repair an injury suffered from struggling with an inmate eight months earlier, according to ODMP.

Corrections Officer Tracy Cooper was escorting the inmate to a court appearance. The presiding judge ordered the inmate’s restraints to be removed, and once they were, the inmate attempted to escape.

Officer Cooper immediately subdued the inmate but tore his left rotator cuff when they fell to the ground.

Cooper served with the DOC for 15 years. He is survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters.
