BISMARCK — An officer is back at work a day after he was stabbed by an inmate at the North Dakota State Penitentiary who’s serving life in prison for murder.

It happened around 6 p.m. Sunday in the segregation unit.

Highway Patrol Capt. Kyle Kirchmeier, who’s investigating, says that when the officer approached a cell door, the inmate pushed the door open, knocked the officer to the ground and jumped on top and assaulted him.

He says the inmate used a homemade metal shank as a weapon.

The officer’s name wasn’t released. He was able to get away but did suffer wounds that required treatment at a hospital.

Kirchmeier says the inmate was 43-year-old John Bridges.

Once the investigation is done, the Burleigh County prosecutor will decide on charges.
