TEHACHAPI, Calif. — An inmate stabbed a correctional officer at a Tehachapi prison Tuesday.
Durrell Puckett, 30, used a manufactured weapon to stab the officer in the head at California Correctional Institution, a California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation news release said. The officer was treated for abrasions and cuts at a local hospital and is recovering at home.
Puckett carried out the attack after summoning correction staff to his cell at 7:03 p.m., the release said. While speaking with staff, he covered his cell door window so officers couldn’t see what he was doing.
A medical emergency was announced and Puckett threw an unknown substance on prison staff as they entered the cell, according to the release. He then stabbed the officer.
Staff used pepper spray, baton strikes and an extraction shield in subduing Puckett. He was taken to a hospital for treatment of a cut to the back of his head.
Afterward, he was transferred to California State Prison-Corcoran and has been placed in a segregated unit pending an investigation.
Puckett is serving a sentence of 82 years and 10 months to life in prison for two counts of rape, attempted rape and other offenses.
