FORT COLLINS, Colo. — A former inmate at the Larimer County jail came to the rescue of a deputy who was being attacked by a motorist, the sheriff’s office said.

The deputy, identified as Justin Atwood, stopped on Interstate 25 about 7 p.m. Thursday to investigate a disabled vehicle with another motorist assisting, according to the sheriff’s office.

Atwood asked for identification from the two motorists and a check revealed one of men was wanted on an outstanding warrant.

Atwood attempted to arrest the man but was attacked, according to the sheriff’s office. The two struggled on the ground next to the highway and that’s when the second motorist came to the aid of the deputy and helped him subdue the combative motorist.

Atwood was taken to the Medical Center of the Rockies for treatment of his injuries.

Upon further investigation, other deputies determined the motorist who came to the deputy’s aid was a former inmate at the Larimer County Jail who remembered Atwood when he was there.

The former inmate said Atwood always treated him fairly and with respect and that’s why he wanted to help him.

Donovan James Boggs, 19, was booked into the Larimer County Jail for investigation of second-degree assault on a police officer, driving while his license was under restraint and criminal impersonation. He was not injured in the altercation with Atwood.
