Correctional officer still hospitalized after being assaulted by inmate

Suffered a broken jaw and several cuts and lacerations to the head and remains under observation

SIOUX FALLS, South Dakota — A correctional officer assaulted over the weekend at the South Dakota State Penitentiary is still hospitalized and will remain so for a few more days, the Department of Corrections announced Monday.

Cpl. Zane Mathis was attacked and punched in the head several times at around 8 p.m. Saturday in the prison’s maximum security Jameson Annex.

He suffered a broken jaw and several cuts and lacerations to the head and remains under observation at a Sioux Falls hospital, DOC spokesman Michael Winder said Monday morning.

The inmate accused of attacking Mathis, 28-year-old Carlos Green, was placed in disciplinary segregation and remains there.
