SIOUX FALLS, SD — An attack at the South Dakota State Penitentiary has many wondering what’s happening behind the prison’s walls.
Authorities say an inmate punched Corporal Zane Mathis several times on Saturday. He remains in the hospital with a broken jaw on Monday night.
Todd Winkel, a former South Dakota State Penitentiary corrections officer, said he was surprised when he heard about the assault. He said he knows the Penitentiary is a dangerous place to work.
“There were many, many times that I saw people who ended up with, whether it was a golf pencil in the throat from an inmate in the mental health unit to assaults that were a physical confrontation or a sneak attack with a padlock in a sock or a bar of soap in a sock that would hit somebody along side the head or in the back,” Winkel said.
