BOONE COUNTY, Ind. — An inmate being treated in an emergency room tried to make a grab for a gun in a correction officer’s holster and is now facing new charges.

The Indy Channel reports that CO Susan Kinney had been overseeing inmate Bradford D. Boyers at Witham Hospital after being found unconscious in his cell.

He woke up in the ER room and, while partially restrained, made a reach for Kinney’s gun while she was putting on medical gloves.

Once Kinney realized Boyer had his hand around her gun, she trapped his hand with her own and a struggle ensued. Kinney fell to the floor on her gun side and nurses and medics arrived to help her loosen Boyers’ grip on the gun.

Medical staff found nothing wrong with Boyers and he was returned to a holding cell at the jail.

The inmate later explained he “just wanted to die” and claimed to be suicidal. He allegedly claimed he wasn’t going to hurt anyone but himself.

Boyers now faces charges of battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting law enforcement and disarming a law enforcement officer.
