GOUVERNEUR — An inmate at the Gouverneur Correctional Facility has been accused of injuring two corrections officers during an assault at the prison Monday evening.
The inmate, Taquan Nimmons, 28, was in the infirmary when he allegedly attacked the officer who escorted him there, then punched the face of another officer who came to help, according to John P. Gavin, regional vice president of New York State Correctional Officers and Police Benevolent Association, the union representing the corrections officers.
The officers — whose names are not being released — were treated for injuries suffered in the attack. One was out of work Tuesday for treatment at E.J. Noble Hospital, Gouverneur, and the other remained on duty, according to a Department of Corrections news release.
Mr. Nimmons is facing DOC charges of violent conduct, assault on staff and refusing a direct order. He also could face criminal charges for the assault. He is serving a 3½-year sentence for attempted assault and criminal possession of a weapon.
Gouverneur Correctional Facility is a medium-security prison that houses 800 inmates and has a total of 367 employees — 257 security officials and 110 civilians. There have been seven reported attacks on officers by inmates at the facility since 2010, DOC statistics show.
