URBANA, Ill. — A corrections officer was injured after an inmate attacked him with a broken broom handle.
The News-Gazette reported that inmate Donnie Caldwell Jr., 23, was charged Monday with aggravated battery to a correctional officer. Caldwell, who was in the dayroom at the time of the incident, asked the 31-year-old corrections officer to let him back in his cell. The officer refused, citing it was against the rules.
Soon after, Caldwell hit the officer in the back of the head with a broken wooden broom handle.
The officer, who was able to call for help on his radio, suffered skin tears, cuts and scratches to his hand, wrist, forearm and elbow, according to the report. He also suffered bruises on his right wrist and the back of his head.
If convicted of attacking the officer, Caldwell faces an extended prison term of two to 14 years.
