JUNEAU, Alaska — An inmate at Waupun Correctional Institution was sentenced to 16 additional months on top of a 20-year sentence for injuring two correctional officers.

According to Beaver Dam Daily Citizen, on March 5 a correctional officer was handing out meals in the segregation unit when David E. Bowers began arguing about the meal he had been given. Bowers grabbed the officer’s hand and shirt through the metal trap, but eventually let go. The officer called for assitance, but before help could arrive, Bowers again grabbed the officer’s hand and attempted to pull him trough the trap into the cell.

A second officer who attempted to free the first also received scrapes from the meal trap. Bower was then escorted to another cell, where he spat at one of the officers, hitting the officer’s hand and shirt.

Bowers has previous convictions of battery by prisoner; his additional 16 months will be served consecutive to the sentence he is currently serving. The 20-year sentence is for a conviction of first-degreee sexual assault of a child in 2000.
