WAUSAU, Wisc. — A Marathon County correctional officer is fighting for her life after being brutally assaulted Wednesday by an inmate in the Marathon County Jail.

Daily Herald Media has learned the name of the critically injured officer, who reportedly is in the intensive care unit with a head injury, but is withholding that information until it is confirmed by the Marathon County Sheriff’s Department. A spokesman for Aspirus Wausau Hospital said Thursday he was asked to refer all calls seeking information about the officer’s condition to the Marathon County Sheriff’s Department.

The department issued a two-paragraph news release Thursday that said an inmate hit a female correctional officer in the head with his fist, rendering the officer “incapacitated” before injuring another officer during an ensuing struggle. The Sheriff’s Department said it would release no additional information until a news conference scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday.
