ALDEN, N.Y. — An inmate seriously injured a corrections officer after stabbing him in the head with a toothbrush sharpened to form a knife.

WKBW.com reported that the attack, which occurred at the Wende Correctional Facility on Monday, happened as a CO was searching the inmate’s cell for contraband. While another CO patted down the inmate, the inmate stabbed the CO on the left side of the back of his head.

The inmate then punched an officer in the body and another in the neck before he broke free and ran across the cell block, according to the report. Officials said he grabbed a food cart and garbage can and threw it at the COs.

Officers used pepper spray and were able to restrain the inmate.

A total of four COs were taken to a hospital for treatment. The CO who was stabbed needed seven staples to close a wound behind his ear.
