FORT EDWARD, NY — An inmate who stabbed a corrections officer earlier this year has been charged with five felonies, including attempted second-degree murder.

Juan Diaz is accused of using a homemade, eight-inch pick-type weapon on June 19 to stab an officer in the head an abdomen, according to Post Star. Though the officer suffered serious injuries, he has since recovered. There was no report on whether the officer had returned to work.

Diaz had allegedly hoped to be killed by other officers who came to the rescue of the officer he had attacked. He had pleaded not guilty to the attack and is being held in a maximum-security facility.

He is currently serving a 46-years-to-life prison term for second degree murder, first degree robbery and first-degree assault confictions in 2004 for beating a handicapped man to death.
