SENECA COUNTY, NY — A 42-year-old inmate attempted to escape the Seneca County Correctional Facility on Monday, according to the Seneca County Sheriff’s Office.

At about 7:57 p.m., inmate Aaron L. Russ allegedly struck a corrections officer in the back of the head while the inmate was confined within the Maximum Housing Segregation Unit of the facility. Deputies said Russ struck the officer with a laundry bag filled with several hard items.

Russ then forced his way out of the MHSU and into the Housing Unit Day room of the facility. The struck corrections officer caught up with him, but deputies said Russ knocked the corrections officer to the floor. Russ then took the officer’s keys and attempted to unlock a secure door, but other officers responded to the scene to assist and took control of the inmate without further incident, deputies said.

The 42-year-old Waterloo native was charged with second-degree assault, first-degree attempted escape and first-degree promoting prison contraband. Deputies said Russ will be arraigned on Tuesday and has been placed in a secure disciplinary segregation unit.

The struck corrections officer suffered contusions and abrasions to his head and hand. The officer was treated and released at Geneva General Hospital.
