Off-duty CO wounds attempted burglars during shootout

Officer was taken to the hospital for a stress-related medical condition

NEWARK — An off-duty corrections officer critically injured two gunmen after they allegedly tried to rob him.

The corrections officer, who has not yet been identified, was leaving his vehicle when three men approached him, according to NJ.com. They exchanged gunfire, and the officer shot two of the suspects.

Those who were shot were taken to University Hospital, where they were listed in critical condition. The officer was also taken to the hospital for a stress-related medical condition.

The incident is still being investigated.
