CHICAGO — An off-duty Cook County correctional officer was shot in the back during an attempted robbery Wednesday night in front of his Southwest Side home, officials said.
Officer Jacob Cano was leaving for work when he was approached by two men attempting to rob him, Cook County sheriff’s spokesman Steve Patterson said. Cano was then shot, but he did not fire back, police said.
It happened at 9:15 p.m. in the 4600 block of West 82nd Street, fire officials said.
The officer was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, initially in serious condition. But Patterson said Cano suffered a graze wound and was expected to be released.
Cano, who has worked as a correctional officer since 2003, works the 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. shift at the Cook County Jail’s maximum security Division 1, Patterson said.
Sheriff’s workers were told there may be two people in custody for the shooting, but police did not confirm that anyone was in custody Wednesday night, officials said.
