Pa. correctional officer dies one month after inmate attack

Correctional Officer Gary Chapin succumbed to injuries sustained from an attack by an inmate in the Crawford County Correctional Facility

MEADVILLE, Pa. — Correctional Officer Gary Chapin died yesterday from injuries sustained last month after being attached and beaten by a Crawford County jail inmate.

Gregory G. Brown, 24, of Meadville, was charged by Pennsylvania State Police on Oct. 29 with one count each of aggravated assault, assault by a prisoner, and recklessly endangering another person. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on those charges Dec. 10.

Officer Chapin was transported to a local hospital, but never regained consciousness after the attack.
