ANNISTON, Ala. — A 15-year-old boy at the Coosa Valley Juvenile Detention Center assaulted a corrections officer Saturday evening, Anniston police said today.
Anniston police Capt. Allen George said a corrections officer was placing the juveniles back into their cells Saturday evening. The 15-year-old suspect was still outside his cell, George said, when he attacked the officer.
According to George, the boy punched the 48-year-old officer. The officer suffered a bloody nose, facial swelling and a small scratch under his eye, George said.
George said the officer was expected to recover from his injuries. George said he was unsure why the teen was in the detention center and said the young man had not been formally charged with assault as of this morning.
The teen is likely to be charged with second-degree assault, a felony.
George said anyone who assaults a corrections officer, police officer or teacher automatically faces second-degree assault charges because of the victim’s position.
