SIOUX FALLS, SD — A South Dakota correctional officer who was assaulted over the weekend remains hospitalized but is in good condition.
Corporal Zane Mathis was punched in the face several times by an inmate in the maximum-security Jameson Annex of the South Dakota Penitentiary in Sioux Falls on Saturday. The assault happened around 8 p.m. Saturday night and put the Jameson Annex on lockdown until Sunday morning.
Mathis underwent surgery for a broken jaw over the weekend at Avera McKennan Hospital and is expected to remain there for a few more days. The Department of Corrections says the inmate who committed the assault is Carlos Green, a convict who has a history of violence.
“I don’t think it was unpredictable that he would be involved in something like this,” former Brown County Deputy State’s Attorney Lori Ehlers said.
