PORTSMOUTH, Ohio — An inmate involved in the stabbing attack of an Ohio corrections officer pleaded guilty last week.
According to the Washington Post, Inmate Casey Pigge was sentenced to 32 more years on April 17 after pleading guilty to the 2018 attack of Officer Matthew Mathias. Pigge was already serving a life sentence for three slayings.
Pigge and co-defendant Greg Reinke planned their attack on the officer, with Pigge stabbing Mathias with shanks made of pieces of metal from his bed.
The officer was stabbed 32 times as he escorted Pigge and Reinke to the prison infirmary. He had numerous internal injuries and still hasn’t returned to work.
“The brutality of this ranks up there with the worst I’ve seen,” Scoito County Prosecutor Shane Tieman said. “I’m hopeful that this case will bring to light some of the things that our law enforcement personnel have to deal with in the prison system, and some good can come of this.”
Pigge and Reinke are both on a hunger strike at the Ohio State Penitentiary, alleging mistreatment. Reinke has missed 18 meals since April 18 and Pigge has missed nine meals as of April 17.
Reinke pleaded guilty of the stabbing Mathias last month and was also sentenced to 32 years for the incident. He was also sentenced to 54 more years for repeatedly stabbing handcuffed prisoners.
