MOBILE, Ala. — A Jan. 2015 attack on a corrections officer sparked changes at the Mobile County Jail, AL.com reported.
The attack was not the first one on a CO, but changes were put in place to make sure another was not possible.
“It was sort of the straw that broke the camel’s back,” Warden Noah Price Oliver told the news site.
In 2015, they had 44 incidents in which COs needed to use force on inmates. In 2016, there have only been 13 since the changes occurred.
Safety was the main motivator in the changes. Officers were often working 12-hour shifts without breaks.
Now, inmates cannot move anywhere in the jail without restraints or an escort. Other changes included decreasing visitation, mail restriction, and removing some in-jail classes.
“There’s a lot less freedom in movement throughout the entire facility,” Oliver said
Officials never knew why the inmate attacked the unidentified officer, but believe he may have been trying to steal the officer’s uniform for an escape attempt.
