MARATHON COUNTY — Marathon County correctional officer Devin Litza said she fears for her life every time she goes to work at the Marathon County Jail, but she is confident that changes are now being made to improve security.

“I am a target,” Litza said. “I have been told I will be targeted by inmates. That’s something I deal with every day. For the first time, though, I have hope. We’re getting somewhere.”

Litza spoke Tuesday to five members of an independent jail security panel while they toured the facility. The panel, which is made up of community members from a diverse cross-section of the community, aims to improve safety at the jail for inmates and staff members by examining jail policies and procedures. Former Rothschild Police Chief Bill Schremp, Mount View Care Center Administrator Lori Koeppel, Intercity State Bank President Randy Balk, LandArt owner Paul Jones and Daily Herald Media General Manager Michael Beck have all been selected to perform the review.
