‘Dick Tracy'-esque contraband located at Pa. prison

The inmate complained of it not working well to make calls, but did use it to play games

NORTHAMPTON COUNTY, Pa. — An inmate was recently caught with what is being described as a ‘Dick Tracy,’ high-tech piece of contraband: a watch that doubles as a cell phone.

According to the Morning Call, inmate Jamarcus A. Fennel was caught hiding the cell phone device on January 17. Corrections officers received a tip that work-release inmates were passing it around.

Fennel was brought before Judge Michael Koury Jr. to plead guilty for tampering with evidence. Koury asked Fennel how well the watch turned cell phone worked.

The inmate said it didn’t work well, requiring a functioning wireless connection for calls to happen.

Fennel’s defense lawyer explained that the inmate wasn’t involved in bringing the device to the prison, having only found it there.

Fennel also explained another use he had for the device: playing games on it.

“I don’t really mean to be funny, it actually had games on it,” he said.
