ATLANTA, Ga. — An Atlanta City Jail corrections officer is recovering after surviving an attack from more than a dozen inmates.

FOX News reports that the officer was attacked while trying to remove a contraband cell phone from an inmate’s cell.

Inmates piled onto the officer and stomped him to the floor. A second officer responded, and was also attacked.

A radio call brought more officers to quell the incident and rescue the two attacked officers.

The first officer, badly beaten, is currently being treated at Grady Memorial Hospital and was expected to be released Thursday. The second officer was not hospitalized.

The Chief of Police warned his staff that if he finds out someone allowed the phone inside, that person will be fired.
