JACKSON, Miss. — The Mississippi Department of Corrections has confiscated over 511 cellphones in 2014, and have since donated them to ‘people who actually need them.’

According to WJTV, the contraband items are going to charities like Cellphones for Soldiers and a host of crime victims, crime victim advocacy groups, homicide survivor’s coalitions, vulnerable adults and domestic violence shelters.

“We proudly accept the donated cellphones from MDOC. It is imperative that crime victims and their families have the support they need, and the cellphone donations is certainly welcome assistance,” said Suzanne MaGee of the Gulf Coast Women’s Center for Non-violence and Charity of Miss. Coalition for Survivors of Homicide Victims.

ACA President Christopher B. Epps said, “I lose a lot of sleep worrying about cellphones. We have proof they have been used in escapes, to put hits out on people, and for other criminal activities.

“But it’s very satisfying when we can then turn that corruption into something positive for crime victims and our military.”
