ROANOKE, Va. – ITT Industries Night Vision, a division of ITT Industries, Inc. (NYSE: ITT), today announced that it will support the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF) for the third year in a row with a $25,000 gift. This support is part of the company’s new Saved by Sight campaign to promote officer safety and equipment preparedness in low- and no-light operations.
“Officer safety is sacrificed without the proper life saving equipment and training,” said Larry Curfiss, vice president, business development for ITT Industries Night Vision. “We believe our support of the Memorial and the Saved by Sight campaign will save officers’ lives and help them to be more effective crime fighters.”
The Saved by Sight campaign will launch in January 2002 and will seek to quantify officers’ vulnerabilities without night vision or thermal equipment, and the successes of officers who have had the advantage due to night vision or thermal equipment.
Craig W. Floyd, NLEOMF chairman, said, “Night vision technology aids in preventing, stopping and solving crimes while ensuring officer safety. It is saving lives, protecting communities and reducing the fear of crime. For the Memorial, this long-term corporate alliance will help us to accomplish one of our primary missions – to save the lives of law enforcement officers.”
ITT Industries Night Vision has worked closely with departments across the country to determine the best way to increase officer safety with night vision. Key areas for night vision use include surveillance, narcotics operations, K-9, building searches, disaster preparedness, homeland defense preparedness, patrol, serving warrants, perimeter searches and special operations.
The Bureau of Justice’s nationwide crime statistics show that most acts of violence occur after dark (69 percent of all rapes, 49 percent of all burglaries, 65 percent of all business-related burglaries and 65 percent of all aggravated assaults).
And police officers continually place themselves in harm’s way to serve and protect the public. Seventy-one percent of assaults on police officers occur at night, along with 62 percent of police officer fatalities. According to the NLEOMF, more officers were killed between 10 p.m. and midnight than during any other two-hour period in the past decade.
About NLEOMF
The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial (www.nleomf.com), authorized by an act of Congress and signed into law by President Ronald Reagan in 1984, honors federal, state and local law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty, and recognizes the service and sacrifice of all officers. Congress authorized the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, Inc. (NLEOMF), a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization to establish this Memorial. The Memorial was completed and dedicated by President George Bush on October 15, 1991. In May 1993, the Memorial Visitors Center opened. The mission is to generate increased public support for the law enforcement profession by permanently recording and appropriately commemorating the service and sacrifice of law enforcement officers; and to provide information that will help promote officer safety.
