MASON CITY, Iowa — An Iowa jail inmate at a Mason City hospital has been accused of hurting a corrections officer and nurse while trying to escape.

The Cerro Gordo County sheriff’s office says 42-year-old Dale Joseph Lewis Jr. attacked the officer Tuesday afternoon at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa. The officer had been guarding Lewis, who was at the hospital for undisclosed medical issues.

Lewis is accused of trying to subdue the officer before running down a hallway and knocking down a nurse.

The Mason City Globe Gazette reports the officer caught up with Lewis and used a Taser on him. He was taken into custody without further incident.

Lewis faces multiple charges, including assault on a corrections officer. He remains at the county jail. Court records do not list an attorney.
